On the Road

The car is on the road and running good. I ended up having to drop the tank and clean out a ton of rust. I added a filter to the line between the tank and the pump (it has an external pump). I also had to replace the pump because rust worked its way into it an burned it out. I have about $500 into the car now. I have new fluids to replace the ones in the car and will be changing them this week. I’m going to register the car today. Also I’m going to have the car aligned soon because it pulls to the left.

The List Continues

I replaced the TPS with a good used unit from the salvage yard.  I also replaced the intake air temperature sensor since the wire was sheared off.  The air flow meter has been swapped out because it was also sticking.
I have a list of things to do:

-First I’m going to check the TPS to make sure it is set right.
-test water temp sensor.
-set the L-R screw to the middle.
-try the fuel volume test.
-do a code check (I did see the archive and I bought 2 LEDs to check it)
-install better injector bleed-off setup

The existing injector bleed-off setup:

Continued Diagnostic

I worked on the car again on Sunday.
I cleaned the air flow meter, replaced cap and rotor and ran seafoam through the car. I also tested the TPS and found out it was sticking. The leading timing is now adjusted as well.

What still needs to be done:
-finish checking timing
-install replacement TPS
-check 6 port actuators
-check fuel pressure
-test temp sensor
-test air flow meter
-test ecu
-run codes
-replace air filter (very hard to find)
-change all fluids including tranny and rear
-grease everything
-clean interior

The Car Runs!!

Thanks to Ian, Zico, Simon, and Eric (some of the local RX-7 guys) for the help figuring out what is wrong with the car.

We traced it to a short in the 20a main fuse. I started disconnecting relays and it turned out one of the relays was shorting on it’s body. I opened it up and a screw in the relay had worked it way out. I screwed it back in and the car ran.  The trouble relay was the check and choke relay.  It doesn’t stay running for long but it is a good start.

We had to mess with the idle, a/f, and replace spark plugs and fuel filter. Simon drained the really bad gas. We cleaned the cap and rotor. Put fuel injector cleaner in the tank.

What still needs to be done:
-clean air flow meter
-check timing
-replace cap and rotor
-replace air filter (very hard to find)
-run seafoam through the car
-change all fluids including tranny and rear
-grease everything
-clean interior (carpet is worse than most cars in the salvage yard)

Have the Title

The previous owner of the car couldn’t find the title when I picked up the car but gave me a bill of sale.  The title just came in the mail today.  I plan to start working on getting the car running now since I now have the title.

Doing some more looking through the car and it came with the owner’s manual, FSM (factory service manual), haynes manual and Chiltons manual.  The car also has early aftermarket floor mats and still has the sunroof bag.  The alternator is a new bosch replacement.  The previous owner told me car would not run no mater what he tried, he thought the problem was electrical but didn’t know beyond that.  He said he put new tires on the car 2 years ago right before he parked it. He also included a new oil cooler line from mazda with the car.

I’m starting on the troubleshooting for the no start. Here is the Troubleshooting for no start out of the FSM:

My new car

I picked up a 1984 RX-7 GSL-SE over the weekend. The odometer reads 189,500 but the car looks to very well maintained for most of its life.  The car does seem like it’s been neglected for the past 6 years or so. The interior need a real good cleaning but is otherwise very good shape. The carpet on the driver’s side looks like a quart of oil was dumped all over it and is saturated. The exterior has the original paint with the original pinstriping still intact.  The front bumper, header panel, hood and cawl appear to have been repainted at some point in the past. The left front fender is pushed in and torn where it meets the door and will need to be replaced. The front bumper cover will need to be replaced. The car has a dent in the rear above the left tail light that looks to be fairly easy to fix. The motor doesn’t run but it turns over and looks to be in great shape just very dirty. I haven’t spent much time diagnosing the car. My guess is the car isn’t getting fuel. It could be the ECU though.  The car looks like it has sat for a number of years, there is an oil change sticker on the car from ’06 and the oil looks that bad.

The front fender damage is visible in this picture.

You can see the bumper damage here.
